The CLAIMA Consortium met online on 14 Sep 2026 to open four years of work on AI for climate. This new Horizon Europe project is dedicated to advancing AI-driven climate science across Europe. The online kick-off was an inspiring and efficient start to the project, while the consortium waits to meet in person in the coming months. One main message came through from our coordinator Nikolay Koldunov (AWI): we will succeed only if we make sure our outputs are useful and relevant to the community!
CLAIMA will run through August 2030, developing an AI platform for European climate modelling deployable on HPC and AI Factory infrastructures, aligned with initiatives like Destination Earth (DestinE).
Over the coming years, the consortium will focus on four application areas:
- Earth system science
- Climate-resilient shipping
- Energy infrastructure planning
- Climate-related health risks
The mission: strengthening Europe's scientific and digital sovereignty in AI-driven climate science.
